Remember how last week we started making a mixed tape (but really it’s a drag-and-drop playlist that vibes with all of the love and care of an old school mix) of songs that bring us joy? We’re doing it real slow like, a song every week or two or three. There’s no stress to instantly think of every single song that lights you up. Also, we want to get into the habit of adding to it on the regular.
Last week I asked you to do two very difficult things: come up with a name for your mix and add one song that’s always guaranteed to shift your mood.
Here’s the good news, both of those are allowed to change. And your mixed tape can grow accordingly.
In the olden-olden days, mixed tapes took up real estate on 90 minute cassettes. You could record on each side of the tape, giving you 45 minutes of carefully chosen and exquisitely ordered songs per side. Only the very best could time their songs to leave the smallest amount of blank tape possible at the end of a side without cutting off a song. These dedicated mix masters knew how to use a pencil to move the tape just enough to create a perfect segue, as well as employing said pencils when the tape deck got hungry and ate the tape, leaving a giant noodly mess.
We have none of these worries with our 2025 mixed tape, we can pop songs in and move them around at our leisure.
This week’s assignment is really easy:
Think back all the way to 2024. What songs made you happy? Pick one or two or three and add them.
Remember this is a judgement free zone.
I’m going with Pink Pony Club by Chappel Roan and I Can Do It with A Broken Heart by a female singer/songwriter named Taylor Swift.
