ADVENT(ure) is a daily, secular, advent-ish calendar of micro-joys for the month of December. Feel free to send me your ideas or suggestions. We will return to our regular weekly posting in January. Thank you for your support.
This is a deviled egg appreciation post.
A few deviled egg fun facts:
Everybody loves deviled eggs
If you bring them to any sort of gathering you’ll be popular and they’ll disappear immediately
Boiled stuffed eggs have been around for about 900 years
Deviled eggs are the best food ever (no relish, please)
Pro tip: if you don’t have a special deviled egg plate or container (I highly recommend one), always lay down some greenery or lettuce on your plate. Those slippery little suckers love to slide around and go on little trips.
I made this mistake once, sending out trays of passed nibbles for a cocktail party. The chief stewardess turned quickly with the egg platter in her hand. The platter moved with her, the eggs did not. It was cartoonish, the way she twisted and the eggs had no traction on their platter, nothing to encourage their round wet bottoms to stay in place. When the platter swept to the side, the eggs did not. They hovered in place in midair for one very confused microsecond before succumbing to gravity, plopping onto my galley floor, in the middle of a very hectic service time.
Lesson learned.
Another pro-tip: for perfect peel eggs, cook for 3 minutes in your electric pressure cooker followed by a quick release and a dunk in an ice bath. They practically peel themselves.
A note on garnish: I love these edible stars, but they dissolved on the eggs. They’re perfect for all manner of cakes and baked goods, but not moist foods. The edible glitter, however, holds up. Pay attention to what you’re buying. Many products that call themselves “edible glitter,” are actually just a luster dust, which is more of a pearlescent powder. A friend recently picked up some actual edible glitter at her local Dollar Tree.
I’m always open to ideas, suggestions, shenanigans, tomfoolery, collaborations, cheese, snacks, and field trips.
