(rabbit, rabbit, rabbit)
Every year the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) invites students, alum, and high schoolers to draw all over the sidewalks in Forsyth Park. It’s a whole thing: there are musical performances, interactive sculptures, games, and what feels like billions of people, shuffling around the park trying to get a look at the masterpieces unfolding at their feet.
Hundreds of artists sprawl all over the sidewalk, turning their allotted square into a temporary mini-mural while covering almost every part of their person in chalk. By Saturday afternoon, the footpaths of the park are a riot of color. First thing Monday morning, the power washers come out.
I took these pictures Sunday evening. While most people strolling through the park look down careful not to step on Elvis or a yawning kitten, plenty of cyclists zoom over the art. There’s something about the random foot or tire prints and leaves strewn atop the work that adds to the arts temporal nature.
I don’t know why I get so jazzed about tinned fish design and images. Look at them tough, those happy little fishies, hanging out in their cozy tins. Who doesn’t love a snail with a disco ball for a shell by Shannon Snow. And those eggs? And tiger sized strawberries (or strawberry sized tigers)? And Edward Hoppers Nighthawks, but make it a Waffle House with a SCAD Bee? I can’t even.
see you in a few days
